What Does Burnout Feel Like?

You’ve hustled to get to where you are. You’re ambitious, reliable, and successful. But lately, you’ve found yourself feeling burnt out. If we’re being honest, you’ve felt this way for a while. You’re beyond tired. The kind of exhaustion you know that a nap isn’t going to fix. You keep thinking that things will get better but they don’t. That joy and fulfillment you had for your career isn’t there anymore and it’s so hard to get yourself up every day. When you do have a break, you find it hard to relax. An inner voice tells you that you are “lazy” and you feel guilty when you try to engage in self-care because there is still so much to do. You wish you could escape to an island with no cell service. Sounds nice, right? When you thought about life after graduate school, this isn’t what you imagined feeling like. You know something needs to change but you don’t want to give up everything you have worked so hard for.

Why Do I Feel Burnt Out?

Burnout is a common experience that my clients who are high-achieving experience. They worked hard to get to where they are and in the past they had to sacrifice their relationships, sleep, and exercise. That worked and helped them get ahead in their career but it’s no longer working. We live in a society that reinforces busyness, performance, and hustle culture. You may be rewarded for this as others compliment your dedication and work ethic. In addition to living in a society that contributes to burnout, many of my clients are goal-driven and find it hard to relax. They feel lazy if they take a “mental health day”, have difficulty taking their hard-earned PTO, and feel internal pressure to answer emails when they’re off the clock. Burnout leaves them feeling unfulfilled and makes life harder. You don’t have to continue feeling this way.

You Can Rest Without Guilt

You’re already feeling like there are not enough hours in the day and the thought of adding one more thing to your to-do list feels impossible. You don’t have the time to drive to an office for a session and then try to get back to work. Let alone the energy for one more thing. But you know something needs to change. You can’t keep going on like this. Most of my clients have high expectations for themselves and feel that they should be able to handle everything. They tell friends and loved ones to take care of themselves and rest but have difficulty doing this themselves. Sound familiar? I get it. I’ve been there—trapped in the relentless cycle of burnout and chronic stress. But life does not have to look this way. You deserve to feel rested and find enjoyment again. I would love to help you get there.
