Self-Care Ideas in Dallas, Texas
Self-care has been a buzzword for the past decade. Often associated with bubble baths and massages, the purpose of self-care gets overlooked. Self-care is consistently checking in with yourself and your needs. Do you need connection? Less screen time? Or maybe you could benefit from moving your body in ways that feel good. While massages and bubble baths can be used as self-care, they may not be affordable to all and could be a temporary solution to a bigger problem. Setting boundaries, engaging in therapy, and prioritizing rest and sleep are likely do more than a bubble bath. While those might be more advantageous, I have curated a list of self-care ideas in Dallas, Texas that you can try to hopefully fill your cup (in addition to setting boundaries😊).
Get Outside
Research shows that spending time outside has beneficial effects on sleep, improving mood, and reducing stress. While one may not think about getting outside when they think of Dallas, Texas, there are many places to enjoy the beautiful and sometimes hot and humid outdoors. The Katy Trail is a wonderful 3.5 mile trail in the heart of Dallas. You can walk your dog, meet up with a friend, or run/walk their 5K in the fall. The Katy Trail Ice House also provides a nice location to grab a meal and a drink with friends. Another place to get outside in Dallas is the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. It spans 66 acres, has over 1 million plants, and boasts a variety of events including cooking and floral demos, concerts, and tea. Lastly, White Rock Lake is perfect if you like adventure. Located just 5 miles north of Dallas, you can paddle board, rent kayaks, or take your dog to the dog park.
Grab a Meal with Friends
Dallas has lots of wonderful places to eat with a variety of cuisines. My go-to place in Dallas is Muchacho. Located at the Plaza at the Preston Center, Muchacho provides authentic Tex Mex food with THE BEST salsa verde I have ever had. If I could bottle it up and drink it, I would. The brisket flautas are amazing! If Tex Mex is not your thing or may want more whole foods, True Food Kitchen is also a great place. Both places have lunch, brunch, and dinner menus so you can enjoy connecting with friends over a wonderful wholesome meal.
Take a Fitness Class
Fitness classes can be a great way to take care of yourself with many benefits such as connecting with others or moving your body in ways that feel good. Most fitness classes may require a financial investment but there are some that are more financially accessible. What I like about fitness classes is that you can join one that fits your needs and wants. Don’t like running but enjoy a spin class jamming out to Beyonce, try Soul Cycle. Or maybe calmer vibes are more your style and you may enjoy Bar Method and barre classes. The Dallas Yoga Center also offers financially accessible yoga and mindfulness classes including free yoga in Klyde Warren Park.
Explore and Appreciate Local Art
Spending time at museums and looking at art is a great way to learn about other cultures and beat the heat! The Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center are both great places that offer a variety of exhibits and events that feature art. Admittedly, I am not an artist, nor do I have “an eye” for art, but I can so appreciate those who have that talent and choose to share it with the world.
I hope this list has provided some ideas of how you can engage in self-care whether you live in Dallas or are just visiting. Whatever you do for self-care, make sure that it is something that can be incorporated into your life and something you can do consistently. If it is not something that can be consistent, you may also think of other self-care ideas to engage in. I am a big fan of having a variety of self-care strategies because we may not be able to always engage in our favorite ones.
